Workshop: Skills for Disagreeing Better (Braver Angels)
Presented by Trinity Church UCC & Braver Angels
Your neighbors to the north at Trinity Church of Northport will be hosting a Skills for Disagreeing Better workshop on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 PM.
This free, public workshop will be facilitated by Braver Angels moderators Mike Radke and Brent Swenson.
In this polarized time, we lack basic understanding of why people on the other political side hold their beliefs. We don’t see them as they see themselves–their core values and central concerns–but instead as we choose to see them. We are tempted to regard our own side as principled and the other side as self-interested.
When we try to communicate across this gap, we often lack the skills for listening carefully, looking for common ground, and sharing our perspectives in ways that connect rather than create more misunderstanding.
We can learn to disagree better in polarized times, which means accurately seeing where we differ and where we share common ground.
Goals
More understanding of the values and concerns of people who differ from you politically
Better skills for listening in a way so that the other person feels heard
Better skills for sharing viewpoints in a way the other person might hear — even if they disagree
Note: This event is to be attended in person.

Turning To The Body: Somatic Workshop
Presented by River’s Edge Somatics & Firelight Embodiment
The intensity of the political landscape is demanding more of us, individually and collectively. We are hearing from many people that they’re feeling powerless, overwhelmed, and confused. Many of us are feeling pulled in many directions trying to put out the quickly multiplying fires and are struggling to take skillful action. Our nervous systems are flooded with information daily and it's taking a toll. As the pressure builds, you might find yourself falling into similar patterns that keep you from living in alignment with your deepest values.
We find ourselves in unprecedented times facing rapidly changing climate on our earth, deeply divisive political climate, and an onslaught of media cycles. All on top of our day-to-day lives, work commitments and relationships.
It can lead to waves of overwhelm and numbing. How do we find stability and grounding when the ground seems to be shifting often and quickly? How do we decide where to put our attention? Let’s align our “yes’” or “no’s” with what we care about and want in our lives!
Our bodies are a gift and a key. They hold deep wisdom, memory, history and can offer both a source grounding and healing.
Join this introductory workshop to somatic practice and learn ways to find grounding and listen to the wisdom from your body. You will practice centering inside of chaos and learn to take skillful action about what you care about and move more deeply toward what you long for in your personal life, and the world. Facilitators will offer some theory, practice and space to connect. No prior somatic or embodiment experience required.
What does the body have to say?
Come + See
Where: Friends Meeting House at 206 S. Oak St., Traverse City, MI

Featuring an all-star line-up of performers, this 90-minute concert event will celebrate the freedoms guaranteed by our First Amendment—of speech, religion, press, assembly, and protest—and the people power that both fuels these rights and is essential to guarantee them.
Even as authoritarians increase their attacks on our freedoms and communities, we see examples across the country of people rising up together, taking action, and turning back those forces.

Land of Canaan Movie and Q&A
Presented by the NMC International Affairs Forum
Land of Canaan
Documentary w/ filmmaker Q & A
A revealing look at the hidden environmental, social, and economic impacts of U.S. military spending. Event presented in partnership with On The Ground Global.
May 14, 2026
6pm reception w/ olive oil tasting
6:30 documentary
8:00 filmmaker Q & A
Q & A
Nasser Abufarha, Ph.D., producer & protagonist
Maggie Lemere, director
About the documentary
Land of Canaan is a cinematic meditation following Palestinian farmers tending to some of the oldest olive trees in the world: living symbols of livelihood, heritage, and resistance. When Dr. Nasser Abufarha, a Palestinian American entrepreneur, returns to the occupied West Bank and finds the olive oil industry in crisis, he leads a movement to preserve an ecosystem and thousands of years of ecological knowledge, helping to build one of Palestine's most influential fair-trade networks. While Palestinian land, culture, and livelihood face erasure, Land of Canaan documents a way of life, shows us what is at stake, and why it must be protected.
About the filmmakers / panel
Nasser Abufarha, Ph.D.
Producer / Protagonist
Raised among the olive groves of Jenin, Abufarha founded Canaan Palestine, the world’s first fair‑trade and organic olive oil company. Through his work he has connected more than 2,000 small‑scale Palestinian farming families to global markets, brought Palestinian olive oil to international recognition and funded scholarships and women’s cooperatives. His vision of sustainable, community‑based trade has been celebrated worldwide and is even more relevant today as conflict threatens to sever farmers from their land.
Maggie Lemere
Director
Award‑winning filmmaker and oral historian Maggie Lemere is a National Geographic Explorer and co‑founder of the Rhiza Collective. Lemere’s storytelling focuses on the intersections of humanity and the environment; she is currently directing Land of Canaan, “a National Geographic Society‑supported feature film about Palestinians’ relationship with ancient olive trees”. In a recent interview, she said that making the film has become one of the hardest things she has ever done; as violence escalated in the West Bank the project “became a historical document … because of the horrible escalation of violence in the communities where we filmed”. Lemere’s approach uses oral history to foreground love, joy and connection rather than trauma alone, revealing a seldom‑seen side of contemporary Palestine.
Meryl Marsh (moderator)
Board Member, On The Ground Global
Meryl has been volunteering with OTG since she participated in Run Across Palestine and Run Across Congo and is thrilled to be on the board. She is based in Traverse City, MI.

EQMI Capital Day
Presented by Equality Michigan
Michigan Statewide LGBTQ+ Capitol Day - 2026
We are at a critical moment for LGBTQ+ rights in Michigan and across the country. Attacks on our community are escalating, including in the Michigan House of Representatives, where elected officials are voting to take away our rights and trying to use our existence as a tool of dangerous political propaganda. We cannot afford to be silent, the time to act is NOW.
Join Equality Michigan Action Network, Equality Michigan, and the Michigan LGBTQ+ Commission on Wednesday, May 13 for our 4th annual Statewide LGBTQ+ Capitol Day in Lansing. This is your opportunity to speak face to face with lawmakers about the issues that matter most to our community, from health care access to safety and equality for all.
This is our most important Capitol Day yet. Our elected officials need to hear from you. They need to know that protecting trans people from dangerous political attacks is imperative, and we will not back down.
Every voice must be heard, and LGBTQ+ people from every district across Michigan must be represented.
About Capitol Day
For those who have not attended previous capitol days, you can expect to be meeting with your elected officials. We have scheduled meetings with your elected officials for you! You do not need to do that! You will not be alone for these meetings. You will be with fellow advocates from your area of the state.
There will also be a brief morning program ahead of meetings with legislators that includes messaging info, guest speaker(s), and an overview of the day.
An expanded version of the morning orientation will be offered virtually (at least one week in advance) of Capitol Day so that you can feel optimally prepared for the day.

Imagining A Michigan With Rent Control (Stream)
Presented by We The People Action Fund
VIRTUAL EVENT
We need Michigan to be a place where every working family—no matter what’s in our pockets—has a safe, affordable place to call home.
But in 1988, establishment politicians banned rent control, taking power away from communities. Since then, corporate and landlord interests have rigged the rules—raising rents, driving up evictions, and pushing families out.
But we can make different choices. We can make Michigan a place where everyone can afford to live.
We The People Action Fund will be speaking at the Building Michigan Communities conference May 12, where affordable housing is on the agenda.
Check them out on the livestream at https://www.facebook.com/wethepeopleactionfund, and if you want to build power for working families, sign-up to learn more about their Home Team at wethepeopleactionfund.org/home-team/

Mutual Aid Picnic
As part of the May Day General Strike, we're gathering for a community Mutual Aid Picnic at Rotary Square on May 1 from 1-3pm. Weather permitting only.
What is it?
An informal community gathering where we spend the day together, instead of working, shopping, or going to school, and practice supporting each other.
Mutual Aid
Bring something to give to the community. There is no requirement, and this could be anything from extra food or donatable clothing, to educational materials and petitions.
The Traverse Indivisible blanket will be collecting non-perishable food donations for the Grace Episcopal Food Pantry, and new item donations for Jubilee House, an outreach ministry of Grace Episcopal Church.
Who's invited?
Everyone. Families, individuals, businesses, organizations, all are welcome.
What to bring:
* Beach chairs or a blanket
* Something to share (food, clothes to donate, petitions, educational materials, etc.)
* No money changes hands, just free sharing
* No tables
* No signs in ground, but handheld signs are fine
* No electronic audio
This is not a traditional protest. It's an intentional gathering to build community, practice mutual aid, and show our collective power.

May Day General Strike
✅ Threatening war crimes and committing them
✅ Blatantly manipulating markets
✅ Sacrificing American lives and security
✅ Covering up the largest child sex abuse scandal of all time
Enough is enough.
The regime is breaking every rule, and it’s going to take more than a rally to stop them.
Following the examples of American Unions throughout our history, the historic 2006 day without immigrants that reshaped May Day, and the united response to Minnesota’s resistance to occupation -- it's time for a general strike.
We start small. One single day. This isn't meant to be the end, it's just the beginning.
People across the United States will flex our collective power in a tremendous day of action; rallying, marching, and taking action to demand a country that puts workers over billionaires. We must refuse business as usual.
No Work. No School. No Shopping.
Start prepairing now…
✊ Put in your request for time off
✊ Find something for your kids to do
✊ Make a plan for the day
Then share this idea with everyone you know. It's happening. May 1, 2026.
Toolkits to spread awareness, scripts to talk to businesses, and other ways to amplify this call to action are available at https://maydaystrong.org
Want something intentional to do with your day? Check out our Mutual Aid Picnic happening May 1 at Rotary Square.

National Writers Series: Aziz Abu Sarah &Maoz Inon
Presented by the International Affairs Forum
Purchase tickets here.
Aziz Abu is Palestinian. Maoz Inon is an Israeli. Both have lost family to the conflict and have known the bitterness of righteous anger. The world expected them to be enemies, yet they chose a different path. They forged a bond of brotherhood.
In The Future Is Peace, co-authors Aziz and Maoz take readers on a transformative weeklong journey across a sacred and bloodstained land. Together, they discover the mythic, political, and personal history that divides but also binds them.
Facing competing narratives, these two peace activists explore how compassion and unity can pull humanity back from the precipice of blind hatred. Throughout their travels, they are constantly asked: In the face of so much loss, how can we ever find hope? Their answer is always the same. One cannot find hope. We must create it.
The Future is Peace is a rebuttal to a broken world and a bold challenge to the belief that more violence can ever bring security. Told with unflinching honesty, their story is proof that peace is not a naive dream, but a courageous choice—for reconciliation to heal the wounds of revenge, for partnerships to change a destiny of war, and for empathy to save us from drowning in sorrow.
Pairing unapologetic candor and inspirational prose, Aziz and Maoz are sending an urgent message that the people have the power to make change. Peace is inevitable. For Palestinians, for Israelis, it is not just possible—it is the future.
Aziz Abu Sarah is Co-CEO of InterAct International, a nonprofit dedicated to Middle East peace. He is a peacebuilder, entrepreneur, National Geographic Explorer, TED Fellow, and renowned speaker and trainer on conflict resolution and responsible travel. Aziz is the co-founder of MEJDI Tours, a travel company seeking to transform tourism into a global force of citizen diplomacy. He has won numerous awards, including from the United Nations, the Institute of International Education, and The Explorers Club. Aziz is consistently named one of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan. He has written opinion pieces for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Al-Quds, and Haaretz.
Maoz Inon is Co-CEO of InterAct International, a nonprofit dedicated to Middle East peace. He is an Israeli peace activist and entrepreneur. He was honored with the prestigious Franco-German Human Rights Prize and the Shared Living Award from Abraham Initiatives. He has spoken on Capitol Hill, at U.S. universities, and the European Parliament. He has written pieces for The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Haaretz, and more. When: April 11th, 10am-11am EST

Reclaiming Pride w/ Betsy Coffia : EQMI
presented by Equality Michigan
Join Equality Michigan Action Network on Thursday, March 26 at 6:00 PM for an inspiring program, meaningful connections, and space to build community with others who believe in dignity, equality, and action. Registered guests will receive light appetizers and drink tickets as we gather in solidarity and discuss ways to build lasting power here in Michigan.
We will be joined by Representative Betsy Coffia as our featured speaker, where we will hear her perspective on what it means to show up, build relationships, and translate community energy into lasting impact.
At a time when political attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are mounting across the country, we are choosing courage over fear, community over isolation, and actions over words. Reclaiming MI Pride is about collectivity, connection, and engagement. It is about being loudly and unapologetically queer. It is about supporting, celebrating, and showing up for one another. It is about channeling our pride into meaningful action in a year when so much is at stake.
Reclaiming MI Pride is more than a statement. It is a movement.
Join us! Show up! Stand proud! Fight back!

Somatic Coaching for Organizers
Wielding The Wisdom
Presented by Rivers Edge Somatics & Firelight Embodiment
Do you identify as someone committed to change in your community? Are you a community organizer committed to social justice or liberatory movements? Perhaps you long to be engaged in this work and don’t know how to begin?
The intensity of the political landscape is demanding more of us, individually and collectively. We are hearing from many people that they’re feeling powerless, overwhelmed, and confused. Many of us are feeling pulled in many directions trying to put out the quickly multiplying fires and are struggling to take skillful action. Our nervous systems are flooded with information daily and it's taking a toll. As the pressure builds, you might find yourself falling into similar patterns that keep you from living in alignment with your deepest values.
If this feels true, you’re not alone.
It makes sense we feel powerless inside of all changes we are facing, that’s by design. We believe one of the biggest lies told to us is that we are powerless. Somatics is a path of practice that supports us to reconnect to our own power and take skillful action. It deepens our awareness of our own reactive patterns and helps us learn how to keep moving toward what we care about even when we’re under pressure. We practice connecting with our own embodied agency and power because we have the potential to influence the conditions of our lives and this world. Somatic practice also invites us to claim our full aliveness even as the conditions of the world try to separate us from it.
These times are calling for more of us to show up with courage and clarity about what we love. This 8-session coaching circle will be an introduction to politicized somatics for folks oriented toward political and culture change.
Join for a transformative small group coaching experience that brings organizers and change makers together. Liberation comes when we struggle for it together. Politicized somatics helps us to practice the relational skills we need to embody the world we are dreaming into being. Let’s find and support each other in this work together.
